  18. SUBJECT:        SCO Unix V/386 Release 3.2, Version 4.0, SCO Open 
  19. Desktop Release 2.0, and Adaptec 154x-compatible SCSI Host Adapters

  22. Problem    An Adaptec 154x-compatible SCSI Host Adapter is not recognized on some 
  23. fast 486- based computers.
  24.  
  25. Cause        The SCSI Adaptec 154x driver provided with SCO Unix (ad) execute too 
  26. quickly on 66 MHz and 50 MHz 486-based computers. The driver checks for the 
  27. presence of the Adaptec 154x-compatible SCSI Host Adapter and checks 131,072 
  28. times for a response, but on a fast system, the loop completes and the check 
  29. times out before the SCSI Host Adapter responds. SCO Unix will then fail to 
  30. recognize the SCSI Host Adapter.
  31.  
  32. Solution    A future release of Maintenance Supplement Version 4.2 for SCO 
  33. Unix V/386 Release 3.2 Version 4.0 will correct this problem. The next version 
  34. of SCO Open Desktop will correct this problem. The following temporary 
  35. procedure circumvents this problem:
  36.  
  37. 1.    Make sure the computer is running in slow speed during installation. 
  38. Almost all ISA or EISA computers have at least two speeds. The speed can be set 
  39. on an external Turbo switch or via BIOS Setup. The low speed is usually 8 MHz. 
  40. You can also disable internal and external cache memory to slow the system.

  42. 2.    Install the operating system up to the point where the operating 
  43. system is ready to be booted from the hard disk drive.
  44.  
  45. 3.    After successfully installing the operating system, bring it up in 
  46. System Maintenance (single user) mode. Make copies of the Unix kernel and the 
  47. drivers to be patched:

  51. cd /etc/conf/pack.d/ad
  52. cp Driver.o Driver.o.orig
  53. cd /etc/conf/pack.d.eiad

  61. To change the Adaptec 154x driver, type:

  102. It is safe to  use reboot (ADM) only because the system is in System 
  103. Maintenance Mode. Change from slow speed to fast speed after the computer boots 
  104. either via BIOS Setup, enabling internal and external cache memory, or by 
  105. pressing the Turbo switch.

  107. SCO Unix should boot normally and should recognize the Adaptec-compatible SCSI 
  108. Host Adapter.
